What is new in this game compared to the other two games is the 5 collectible items found throughout the level, similar to the Star Coins found in the New Super Mario Bros. It starts off as a regular grassland level, then moves between an underwater level, a cave level, an auto-scrolling airship level and finally a castle level. Random sprites and shapes constantly spawn around the screen during gameplay, and the screen teeters left and right.ĭuring the level, the theme changes between different types of level. Like the other NSMB games, you have to complete a level essentially under the influence of drugs. Inside it contains a Mushroom disguised as a Fuzzy from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, which causes a 'Fuzzy level overflow' and the real game to unfold. Once entering the first level, you are taken to a blank room with a single Question Block. The game starts out on a map screen similar to the one seen in the original NES Super Mario Bros. Whilst the first game had Mario as the single playable character, and the second game had Toad, NSMB3 puts Luigi under the control of the player.
